A process for providing a protective coating on a substrate comprises (1) applying to the substrate a coating composition comprising a homogenous mixture comprising an inorganic sol and polymerisable organic species, the inorganic sol being obtainable by hydrolysing hydrolysable inorganic monomer precursors to form inorganic monomers; (2) polymerising the polymerisable organic species; and (3) polymerising the inorganic monomers, wherein polymerisation of the organic monomers is initiated prior to completion of polymerisation of the inorganic monomers, to form a solid coating on the substrate. The resulting coating comprises interpenetrating inorganic and organic polymer networks, and may be formulated to be transparent. It is useful in the protection of a wide variety of substrates, and in particular for providing scratch/abrasion resistance to low melting point plastics materials such as polycarbonates and polyacrylates.
La présente invention concerne un processus de dépôt de revêtement de protection sur un substrat qui consiste (1)à appliquer sur ce substrat une composition de revêtement comprenant un mélange homogène constitué d'un sol inorganique et d'éléments chimiques organiques polymérisables. On obtient ce sol inorganique en hydrolysant des précurseurs de monomères inorganiques hydrolysables de façon à former des monomères inorganiques, à polymériser les éléments chimiques organiques polymérisables et (3) à polymériser les monomères inorganiques, la polymérisation des monomères organiques étant initiée avant l'achèvement de la polymérisation des monomères inorganiques, de façon à former un revêtement solide sur le substrat. Le revêtement qui en résulte comprend des réseaux de polymères organiques et inorganiques qui s'interpénètrent, et qui peuvent être préparés de façon à être transparents. Ce revêtement convient pour protéger une grande variété de substrats, et en particulier pour offrir une résistance aux rayures et à l'abrasion à des matières plastiques à point de fusion bas telles que les polycarbonates et les polyacrylates.
