The present invention provides a coating method which comprises applying a coating on a substrate by spray coating and then applying an electrocoating on the uncoated or insufficiently coated areas of the substrate to improve the corrosion resistance of the substrate, particularly its edge portions such as cor- ners, projections and the like. That is, the present coating method comprises applying a coating on a sub- strate by spray coating, curing the resulting film, and applying, on the uncoated areas of the substrate, a cationic electrocoating having a minimum deposition current density of 0.5 mA/cm2 or less, by electrodeposition; in the method, the cationic electrocoating contains a finely divided gelled polymer and gives a film melt viscosity of 105 cp or more.
