ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A novel method and apparatus are disclosed for providing a coat- ing on irregular surface means of a workplace defined by metal support means for a railway vehicle, the support means comprising a metal sheet having a planar surface and a grid-like metal structure fixed against the planar surface, the irregular surface means being disposed in multiple planes and comprised of the grid-like structure and the planar surface. The method includes the steps of providing a reservoir containing a sub- stantially nonmetallic liquid coating material, then applying a liquid film of the liquid coating material on all portions of the irregular sur- face means against the grid-like structure and the planar surface, and then drying the liquid film to solidify the same and to define the coating. The invention is based on the applying step being the steps of: produc- ing a standing wave of the liquid coating material in a stationary posi- tion; then forming a crest in the standing wave disposed above the substan- tially planar main surface of the material, the crest having a dimension which is at least as large as one dimension of the irregular surface means, and finally either moving the workplace relative to the standing wave, or moving the metal support means relative to the standing wave, so that the the liquid film.
