ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE The invention relates to a method of coating webs of cellulosic base stocks wherein a coating material is applied to the web of the base stock so as to improve the properties thereof. In accordance with the invention, prior to the coating, the web is treated with vapors of silane which react with hydroxyl groups in the cellulosic base stock to form a deposit of siloxane and polymers thereof on and integral with the web of cellulosic base stock.
