A method of coating hydroxylated surfaces by gas phase grafting is described. Especially acyl groups, silyl groups and/or alkyl groups are located on the surface of materials by gas phase grafting. The grafting method is a dry process. The materi-al to coat can be organic or inorganic materials. The produced surface coated material are strong and durable and material normal-ly not water-proof can be water-proof due to the surface treating. Examples of items produced from surface treated material may be water-proof cardboard boxes, other containers, furniture, interior for cars and boats. Items produced from organic materials such as from plant parts are biodegradable.

L'invention concerne un procédé de revêtement de surfaces hydroxylées par greffage en phase gazeuse. En particulier, le greffage en phase gazeuse permet d'installer sur la surface de matériaux des groupes acyles, des groupes silyles et/ou des groupes alkyles. Le procédé de greffage est un procédé par voie sèche. Le matériau à revêtir peut être un matériau organique ou inorganique. Les matériaux revêtus en surface ainsi produits sont solides et durables, et un matériau qui n'est normalement pas étanche à l'eau peut être rendu étanche à l'eau grâce à ce traitement de surface. Par exemple, des articles étanches à l'eau pouvant être produits à partir de matériaux traités en surface sont des boîtes en carton, d'autres récipients, des meubles, l'intérieur de voitures et de bateaux. Les articles produits à partir de matériaux organiques, comme des parties de plantes, sont biodégradables.
