ABSTRACT A metal-to-metal bone joint prosthesis resistant to corrosion caused by synovial fluids wherein articulating surfaces normally subject to corrosion by such fluids are coated with an adherent and substantially pore free layer comprising at least one member of the group consisting of platinum, ruthenium, iridium and alloys containing at least one of these metals and wherein the alloy may include a base metal selected from copper, iron, nickel, cobalt, tungsten and molybdenum. The prosthesis may be made using a fused salt process where the surface to be plated is inserted as a cathode in the salt as an electrolyte, the material to form the layer being provided either by using an anode of the same material or introducing the material into the electrolyte as a salt.
