ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A process for producing a coated substrate, such as paper, by coating a substrate, preferably in a single step, with a formulation of 50 to 95 parts by dry weight of a solids dispersion of particulate silica and 5 to 50 parts by dry weight binder in water to a coating weight of less than 3 0 g/m2 per side of the substrate. Also, a substrate, such as paper, coated with a composition of particulate silica and binder in a coating weight of less than 3.0 g/m2 per side of the substrate.
