A B S T R A C T An improved coaxial ophthalmoscope incorporates a light trap for absorbing substantially all of the light not utilized for illuminating the retina of the eye under examination and thereby prevents the unused light from reflecting back into the eye of the viewer thus obscuring the vision thereof. The ophthalmoscope includes means for generating a beam of visible light in a first direction along a first axis . Beam splitter means are spaced from the generating means and are positioned to intercept the beam of light and reflect a first preselected amount thereof in a second direction, different from the first direction, along a viewing axis. The light trap is spaced from the splitter means and is positioned to receive a second preselected amount of the beam transmitted through the splitter means along the first axis. The ophthalmoscope also includes means for directing the first amount of light into an eye under examination and for viewing the eye through the splitter means.
