ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Process for extracting and stripping cobalt from an ammoniacal leach liquor containing cobalt and possibly other metal values such as copper and nickel. The cobalt and other metal values are loaded onto the extractant while the cobalt is in its reduced divalent state. To prevent the cobalt from being stripped during non-cobalt stripping stages, the cobalt on the co-loaded organic extractant is oxidized to place the extracted cobalt ions in the trivalent state. With an extractant co-loaded with trivalent cobalt and other metal values such as nickel, it is possible to selectively strip the other metal values with dilute acid without stripping the cobalt. Subsequently, after the non-cobalt values are stripped from the co-loaded organic, the cobalt ions on the organic are reduced to the divalent state. The organic loaded with divalent cobalt ions is easily stripped with a dilute acid to render the organic recyclable. One important application of the process of the present invention is in purifying an organic extrac- tant which has been poisoned with cobalt. That is, to prevent cobalt values from building up on an organic extractant used to extract other metals, a bleed stream of the recycled organic extractant is stripped of cobalt values in accordance with the present invention.
