The present invention relates to cobalt(II) oxide containing metallic cobalt, to a process for producing it and to its use as an electrode material in a secondary cell. The process comprises: (i) reacting a crystallised basic cobalt compound of general formula: Co[(OH)2]a[O]b[CO3]c wherein the sum of a+b+c is >= 1 and <= 1.5, with an aqueous or alcoholic solution of a carboxylic acid containing at least one carboxyl group; and (ii) separating and calcining the solid thus obtained.
