Abstract of the Disclosure This invention relates to a code generator for text transmission devices. The code generator comprises an electrically changeable read-only memory which is adapted to be written into or changed by an exchange via a trunk line and the content of which is maintained after the operating power has been switched off. The memory can be written into only upon receipt of specific control signals, or with the aid of a code switch. Since the code generator can be written into only by the exchange, it is inaccessible to a user and the danger of adulteration is substantially reduced.
