U.S.833,274 ABSTRACT OF DISCLOSURE A printing element comprising a plurality of print characters is coded so as to identify the nature and orientation of the printing element. A sensor senses the code and the output of the sensor is utilized to control spacing between the character elements and the force applied to the hammer which strikes the character elements. The printing element comprises a daisy-like array wherein the character elements are supported at the end of a plurality of radially extending beams so as to form a substantially circular array. The coded area identifying the printing element and the orientation is displace from the circular array in a substantially arcuate pattern concentric with the circular array.
