A coffee or tea machine comprising, between a riser pipe and a filter vessel, an intermediate container adapted to be emptied periodically by a siphon, provided with a vent pipe, and otherwise enclosed on all sides. The vent pipe opens into a chamber which is arranged externally of the siphon and is defined by walls, only the underside of the said chamber being open. The lower boundary plane of the chamber, arranged in the interior of the intermediate container, terminates below the overflow edge of the said siphon. Venting of the interior of the intermediate chamber thus comes to an end as soon as the water reaches the lower boundary plane of the chamber. This leads to a very rapid increase in pressure in the said intermediate container, resulting in extremely satisfactory and highly effective filling of the siphon.
