Abstract A coil carrier for thread or yarn comprises parallel carrier elements interconnected at a spacing from each other by coupling members to define a common cylindrical enveloping surface. The supporting elements are circumferentially compres- sible and the coupling members are substantially inflexible so that, on the application of radial pressure, the carrier diameter is reduced without markedly changing the spacing between the carrier elements. Said spacing is larger than the circumferen- tial dimension of each carrier element.
