GCD-76-11 291,034 ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A cylindrical coil form, for magnetic coupling with, i.e. applying magnetic fields to an irradiated nuclear magnetic reso- nance gas sample, is provided with peripheral and longitudinal grooves. The peripheral grooves occupy radial planes, while the longitudinal grooves extend along generatrices of a support for coils. The peripheral grooves are not helical in form, but are perpendicular to the axis of the coil form to give an accurately axially aligned, i.e. longitudinal magnetic field. A first coil for providing such strong magnetic coupling along the axis of the coil form is wound in the peripheral, i.e. radial grooves, pairs of mutually adjacent turns being interconnected by short longitudinal, i.e. axial sections of wire in one of the longitudinal grooves. Additional coils are provided for magnetic coupling, i.e. setting up fields, transverse to the axis of the coil through the use of wires extending down one of the longitudinal grooves and back in another longitudinal groove. The coil form may be of phenolic material, or it may be trans- parent so that the nuclear magnetic resonance cell may be ir- radiated directly through the coil form.
