COIN HANDLING DEVICE Abstract of the Disclosure: A coin handling device has a number of walls that coact to define coin passageways and coin reservoirs; and posi- tioning surfaces and complementary surfaces on those walls and a complementary surface on the frame of that coin handling device coact to partially restrain and position those walls. A coin dispensing sub-assembly has positioning surfaces thereon which coact with complementary surfaces on the frame to partially res- train and position -that sub-assembly; and positioning surfaces : on the walls coact with complementary surfaces on the sub- assembly to additionally restrain and position those walls and also to additionally restrain and position that sub-assembly. sing-e fastener secures those walls to the frame and thereby enable those walls to secure that sub-assembly to that frame; whereby a single fastener secures the plurality of walls and the sub-assembly to the frame. The surfaces of the walls . which define the coin passageways and coin reservoirs are' mold-smooth and are uninterrupted and unobstructed, so that coins can move through those coin passageways and enter those coin reservoirs without having to pass joints, cracks or other surface discontinuities. One coin passageway has a gate adja- cent the outlet thereof, and that gate will hold a coin which exits from the coin passageway and will selectively direct that coin toward a coin return chute or a cash box chute, while acting to keep any further coins within that coin passage- way from exiting from that coin passageway. Thereafter, that gate can receive and hold the lowermost coin in that coin passageway, and then subsequently direct that coin toward the coin return chute or the cash box chute, while acting to keep any further coins within that coin passageway from exiting from that coin passageway. As a result, that gate makes it possible to direct one or more coins of a given denomination to the cash box chute and thereafter direct further coins of that denomination to the coin return chute. The coin-dispensing sub-assembly has coin slides that are confined for horizontally directed, reciprocal movement and has gears that are adjacent those slides and are axially translatable into and out of en- gagement with those slides to force those slides to move rela- tive to coin reservoirs. By translating the shafts, on which those gears are mounted, it is possible to selectively engage a desired gear with the coin slide therefor while permitting the other gears to rotate independently of the coin slides therefore A cam shaft provides axial translation of the shafts, and a selector motor can move that cam shaft to sel- ectively cause just one of a plurality of the gears to be set in position to drive the coin slide therefor. That selector motor and cam shaft also move the gate relative to the outlet of the passageway for the coins of given denomination. A coin reservoir has an entrance adjacent the upper end thereof to enable it to store a large quantity of coins therein, and also has an entrance adjacent the lower end thereof to enable it to store a smaller quantity of coins therein A runway and a de- flector can be disposed in two different positions to cause coin to be directed toward or away from the upper entrance, toward or away from the lower entrance, or away from both the upper and lower entrances. A closure for that coin reservoir has a slot therein which is adjacent a coin passageway; and a further slot is provided in a wall of that coin passageway. Those slots 2. are aligned with, and are close to, each other and thereby guide coins transversely through that coin passageway and into that coin reservoir. 3.
