The present invention provides for a coin holder for use in a compartment of a cash tray. The coin holder is sized to fit within the compartment and is provided with at least one slot sized to hold a single denomination of coin on edge. The present invention also provides for a cash tray for use in a cash register, the cash tray having a plurality of first compartments for holding coins of various denominations in sorted order along a front edge and a plurality of second compartments for holding bills of various denominations in sorted order located to the rear of the first compartments. At least one of the first or second compartments is provided with a coin holder sized to fit within the compartment and being provided with at least one slot sized to hold a single denomination of coin on edge.
