A coin transporter facilitates the counting and handling of coins by transporting coins along a coin transport path from an entrance region to at least a second downstream region. A ledge is provided for rolling or sliding support of coin edges while the coins are in an attitude with coin faces inclined at an angle of no more than about 20° from vertical. The transport path includes a first shallow portion in which the ledge is inclined to horizontal between about 0° and about 15° and a second steep portion, closer to the downstream region than the first portion, in which the ledge is inclined to horizontal between about 40° and about 50° such that the centre- to-centre distance between first and second successive coins which enter the first region will increase as the first and second coins successively enter the second region.
