An electronic coin validator for connection to a payphone chassis that is capable of accepting coins of value greater than twenty-five cents is described. The coin validator includes a housing a coin passageway, at least one coin sensor, a control means and a memory. The control means processes signals from the sensor to denominate and validate high value coins, accesses a high value coin credit signal packet corresponding to the denomination of the coin, and outputs the credit signal packet to the payphone chassis.
