ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A blank suitable for minting to form a coin or simi- larly disc-shaped article has an appropriately disc-shaped steel core completely encased by a copper coating electroplated thereon. The blank is produced by first electroplating a thin nickel or zinc coating onto an appropriately disc-shaped steel core such that the nickel or zinc coating completely encases the steel core, and then electroplating a copper coating onto the nickel or zinc coating.
