ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A coke dry cooler in the form of a shaft comprising a top ante-chamber containing the charging opening, followed by a cooling chamber of a larger diameter than the ante-chamber and having a gas supply and a coke outlet at the bottom end, the gases which flow upwards in counter-current through the coke charge being withdrawn via a gas outlet disposed in the top part of the cooling chamber wall, which projects with res- pect to the ante-chamber. In the region of the transition between the ante-chamber and the cooling chamber the shaft is provided with a continuous projection highly resistant to wear and projecting inwardly by about 100 to 300 mm with res- pect to the wall of the ante-chamber.
