ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A coke oven battery for optional heating by means of lean gas or rich gas with twin flues disposed in a row between the ovens. The present invention proposes a construction of a coke oven battery which is to be optionally heated with rich gas or lean gas and has a regenerative heating system to provide firstly a particularly low flow resistance and secondly the least possible content of nitrogen oxides in the smoke gas. In this way, the recent demand for minimizing the amount of nitrogen oxides in burnt gases which are discharged to atmosphere is met. According to the subject invention, two cross-regenerators are disposed below each oven and are biased over their entire length in the same sense and with ducts disposed in the transverse walls and having a graded arrangement of the exit ports. One of the regenerators serves alternatively for preheating the air and communicates with header flues of both adjacent rows of heating flues and the other, when heated with lean gas, serves alter- natively for the preheating thereof and when heated with rich gas serves for preheating the air and communicates with exit ports on the sole of the heating flues of both adjacent heating flue rows and the sequence of the upgoing and downgoing flues alternates from heating flue row to heating flue row.
