ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE There is disclosed a process for converting coal to coke which comprises dry cooling the hot coke with a flue gas which reacts to lean gas during the said dry cooling of the hot coke or with a fuel gas which is inert to the hot coke and using the heated lean gas or the heated fuel gas produced thereby to pre-heat the coal before it is converted to coke. Two alternative forms of plants are disclosed for carrying out the process.
