Cold-forming steel obtained by smelting and refining of an alloy characterized in that the alloy has the following composition by weight: 0.80 - 1.50% carbon, < 1% manganese, < 1% silicon, ~ 0.030% phosphorus, ~ 0.005% sulphur, 6.25 - 9% chromium, < 0.50% nickel, 1.80 - 3% molybdenum, ~ 0.15% aluminum, 0.20 - 0.40% vanadium, 0.60 - 1.50% niobium, < 150 ppm nitrogen, < 50 ppm oxygen, and 500 - 1500 ppm titanium or zirconium, with the remainder being iron plus the impurities characteristic of metal fabrication.
