ABSTRACT Upper and lower body cold weather garments (10, 11) are provided which have excellent warmth, moisture permeability, wind resistance, and water resistance, and are easy to construct. The garment comprises an interior lining fabric (15), such as a loosely knit nylon lining, an outer fabric (16), and a layer (17, 117, 217, 317, 417) of preponderantly open cell foam, preferably about 1/4-one inch thick, between the fabrics. The components are connected together by stitching (30). The outer fabric (15), and the whole garment (10, 11), have an air permeability of less than 15 cubic feet per minute per square foot at 0.5 inches head of water, and moisture vapor transmission of at least 500 grams per square meter per 24 hours. The shell fabric (15) preferably is woven from a fine denier, multi-filament, polyester or polyamide (nylon) yarn. The face (22, 221) of the foam layer abutting the inner lining fabric (16) may be convoluted, having peaks (23) and valleys (24). The peaks (23) are disposed in a grid-like arrangement, with ridges (25) between the peaks (23), and four peaks (23) surrounding a valley (24). The foam may be skinned, with the skin (220, 320, 420) provided on a major flat face of the foam and the other face (221) convoluted, or both faces (321, 421) can be skinned. The foam layer may include two or more thicknesses (417) of skinned foam.
