A grit having a Rockwell hardness from about 40 Rc to about 60 Rc is disclosed. The grit is prepared by cold working a ferrous metal after cleaning and drying it. Cold working may be achieved by grinding, milling, chipping, pulverizing or the like. The ferrous metal may be iron, pig iron, steel, stainless steel and other alloys of ferrous metals.
