Novel Collagenase activator factors CAF-1 and CAF-2 have been isolated and purified from an astrocytoma cell line. These factors regulate the activity of a matrix metalloproteinase having proactive and active forms in mammalian tissue. A method of enhancing angiogenesis in mammalian tissue is described for the treatment of, for example, disorder of embryogenesis, uterine bleeding and in wound healing. Pharmaceutical compositions are provided.
