A collapsible garbage receptacle comprising a top and bottom section, having a channel/groove in the bottom section and a protruding guide member in the top section, and a slot along the channel which may be engaged by the guide member upon rotation of the top relative to the bottom to lock the top section relative to the bottom section. Upon disengagement of the guide with the slot, the top section may be collapsed over the bottom section to reduce the height of the container so that a heavy garbage need not be lifted the entire height of the garbage receptacle when removing it . The channel has a plurality of slots to allow variable height adjustment of height of the receptacle. The top section has a draft angle to allow nestable stacking of the bottom portion of a first receptacle within a top portion of another receptacle.
