A collapsible vacuum cleaner is described, comprising a collapsible canister having a rigid bottom portion comprising a top opening and a rigid top portion comprising a bottom opening and telescopically mounted to the bottom portion so as to be movable longitudinally relative to the bottom portion. To retain a suction seal during operation of the vacuum cleaner, a longitudinally expanding skirt in air impermeable communication between the top portion and the bottom portion maintains the low pressure zone created within the canister by an air mover.
