A dishwasher has a circulating pump and a drain pump. Suction spaces for the pumps are separated by at least one filter. A return valve is located in the flow path of the drain pump so that water flowing back when the drain pump is turned off cannot flow back into the suction spaces. The return valve includes a float that can also act as a second valve permitting flow from the suction space of the drain pump to the suction space of the circulating pump, but blocking reverse flow.
