A color developer for self-transfer papers based on a phyllosilicate capable of swelling is described which is characterized in that the percentage of the phyllosilicate capable of swelling is 50 to 100% by weight, and in that the phyllosilicate has a swelling volume of 5 to 30 ml, relative to a suspension of 2 grams in 100 ml of water, and a specific surface of < 140 m2/g.
