A liquid crystal display consists of a liquid crystal encapsulated with a color filter. The color filter comprises a metal black matrix, an insulating film, a transparent electrode and a coloring matter layer, laminated in that order, on one side of an insulating substrate. The transparent electrode is used as an electrode for driving the liquid crystal.
