A field sequential color head-up display system includes image generating means including a source of light of at least two different wavelengths. A color selective polarizing filter having first and second absorption axes, enables the passage of linearly polarized light of first and second colors. Optical retardation imposed by variable optical retarding means determines the color of the light transmitted by circular polarizing means. Image collimating means apply a generated image of selected colors to an image combiner placed in the line of sight between an observer and a scene, thereby superimposing a generated image over the scene visible to the observer. Holographic elements tuned to the selected wavelengths improve reflection of those wavelengths to the observer.
L'invention est un système d'affichage tête haute couleur à séquences de trames qui comprend un générateur d'images doté d'une source de lumière ayant deux longueurs d'onde différentes au moins. Un filtre polariseur de sélection de couleurs ayant un premier et un second axe d'absorption laisse passer la lumière linéairement polarisée de la première et de la seconde couleur. Un retard optique imposé par un dispositif de retardement optique variable détermine la couleur de la lumière transmise par un dispositif de polarisation circulaire. Un dispositif de collimation d'images transmet une image créée avec les couleurs sélectionnées à un combinateur d'images monté sur la ligne de visée entre un observateur et une scène, et superpose ainsi l'image créée à la scène perçue par l'observateur. Des éléments holographiques accordés aux longueurs d'onde sélectionnées améliorent la réflection des ondes correspondantes vers l'observateur.
