ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Apparatus for automatically sorting fruit and the like by weight or color, or both, using conveyance means to move objects to be sorted past electro- mechanical weighing means and optical color sensing means which, in conjunction with sequential and combinational logic, compare the color and weight of the item to a predetermined criteria and sort according thereto. Optical detection means generate at least two reflectance signals, each representative of the color of an item to be sorted, but responsive to different wavelengths of reflected light. A predetermined plurality of reference signals are provided, the value of each signal being established according to a predetermined criterion. The reference signal means has an input provided by the first of the two reflec- tance signals. Comparison means compare the second of the two reflectance signals to the reference signals for generating a signal therefrom. A clock means incrementally signals changes in position of an item to be sorted, and first position indicating means responds to the signal from the clock means and the signal from the comparison means for generating a signal indicative of the position of an item to be sorted. Discharge means responsive to the signal generated by the position indicating means and said clock means discharges the item at a predetermined position.
