ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE color television receiving apparatus is disclosed in which a chrominance signal passed through a band-pass amplifier is applied through a first variable gain control circuit and through a second variable gain control circuit to a color demodulator cir- cuit. When a received composite color television signal includes a vertical interval reference (VIR) signal, the first variable gain control circuit is controlled in its gain in response to the amplitude of the VIR signal obtained from the chrominance signal that is passed through the first variable gain control circuit. thereby automatically correcting the color saturation level to be constant. When the received composite color television signal does not include the VIR signal, the gain of the first variable gain control circuit is made constant. The gain of the second variable gain control cir- cuit , irrespective of the presence or absence of the VIR signal , is changed by a common adjusting volume control. thereby enabling the color saturation level to be preferentially adjusted.
