Colored fluids for electrowetting, electro fluidic, or electrophoretic devices, and the devices themselves, are dis-closed. The colored fluid can include a non~ aqueous polar solvent having (a) a dynamic viscosity of 0.1 cP to 50 cP at 250C, (b) a surface tension of 25 dynes/cm to 55 dynes/cm at 250C, and (c) an electrowetting relative response of 40% to 80%. Such col-ored fluids further include a colorant selected from a pigment and/or a dye. In another embodiment, the colored fluid can include a non-polar solvent and an organic colorant selected from a pigment and/or a dye. Such colored fluids can be black in color and have a conductivity from 0 pS/cm to 5 pS/cm and a dielectric constant less than 3. The use of the colored fluids offers improve-ments in reliability, higher levels of chroma in the dispersed state, and the ability to achieve higher contrast ratios in display tech-nologies.
L'invention porte sur des fluides colorés pour des dispositifs d'électromouillage, électrofluidique ou électrophorétique, et sur les dispositifs eux-mêmes. Le fluide coloré peut comprendre un solvant polaire non aqueux ayant (a) une viscosité dynamique de 0,1 cP à 50 cP à 250°C, (b) une tension superficielle de 25 dynes/cm à 55 dynes/cm à 250°C, et (c) une réponse relative d'électromouillage de 40 % à 80 %. De tels fluides colorés comprennent en outre un colorant choisi parmi un pigment et/ou une teinture. Dans un autre mode de réalisation, le fluide coloré peut comprendre un solvant non polaire et un colorant organique choisi parmi un pigment et/ou une teinture. De tels fluides colorés peuvent être de couleur noire et avoir une conductivité de 0 pS/cm à 5 pS/cm et une constante diélectrique inférieure à 3. L'utilisation des fluides colorés permet des améliorations de la fiabilité, des niveaux plus élevés de chromie dans l'état dispersé et la capacité d'obtenir des rapports de contraste plus élevés dans des techniques d'affichage.
