ABSTRACT A column for contacting a gas stream countercurrently with a liquid stream, which column comprises a substantially horizontal layer of packing material, a gas inlet and a liquid outlet below said layer and a gas outlet and a liquid inlet above said layer, substantially horizontal liquid distribution means which comprise a plurality of gas passages and openings through which substantially vertical liquid drain pipes having walls pro- vided with liquid passages are mounted, the lower ends of the drain pipes extending below the liquid distribution means and adjacent to the upper surface of the layer of packing material. The column is preferably used in a process for gas/liquid contact.
