ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A carbonaceous feed, such as a heavy hydro- carbonaceous oil or coal and mixtures thereof, is up- graded by a combination coking and catalytic slurry hydroconversion process. A preferred catalyst is derived from a catalyst precursor which is added to the feed of the hydroconversion zone as a catalyst precursor concentrate prepared from a virgin hydro- carbonaceous oil and an oil dispersible metal compound.
