A method for treating diabetes mellitus in an individual in need thereof by administering to the individual a composition comprising a phosphodiesterase proton-pump inhibitor and an anti-inflammatory drug which combined effectively promote differentiation of pancreatic islet precursor cells to mature insulin- secreting cells. The method is exemplified by administration of omeprazole, which stimulates gastrin secretion, and pentoxifylline, which decreases the production of the pro--inflammatory cytokine TNF-alpha, to Nono-obese Diabetic mice.
