A collapsible, compound level apparatus includes first and second linear leveling sections (10, 20). Each section includes at least one flat surface (30) for contact with a work surface and first and second bubble levels (40, 50) for indicating level and plumb, respectively of the work surface (30). One end of the first section (10) has a tongue (80) for engaging a groove (90) located at one end of the second section. The tongue (80) has an oblique surface (120a) and end stop surface (130a) for contacting a mating oblique surface (120b) and end stop surface (130b) of the groove (90). The second section (20) includes a lateral force producing pressure screw (150) for applying a force on the tongue (80) such that the oblique and end stop surfaces are caused to move into mutual alignment, thereby achieving the alignment of the flat surfaces of the first and second sections.
