A quilting machine (10, 100, 200, 300) is provided having a quilting station (27, 127, 227) and a printing station (25, 125, 225) located upstream of the quilting station, with a conveyor (20) extending through each of the stations to convey a web (15) of quilting material through the machine. At the printing station a top layer (15) is printed with a multi-colored design under the control of a programmed controller (35, 135, 235, 335), which may vary the design from section to section of the web so that individual or small quantities of panel sections of the web may be decorated with a different pattern. The conveyor preferably moves the quilting material relative to stationary heads (30), but the conveyor may alternatively stop at various stations and the printing or quilting heads moved relative to the stationary web on the conveyor. Pre- cise longitudinal position information is maintained of the location of the printed pattern. The conveyor then conveys the top patterned layer web through a drying station (26, 126, 226). After bringing the top layer web together with webs of filler (18) and backing material (17), the conveyor conveys the multi-layered web to the quilting station where a quilted pattern is caused by the controller to be sewn on the printed pattern bearing material in registration with the printed pattern. Preferably, printing is applied before the quilting, but quilting before printing can be accomplished according to certain aspects of the invention. A cutoff station (28) separates the web panels bearing composite printed and quilted patterns under control of the programmed controller. For mattress cover manufacture, border panels can be quilted and printed in coordination with the top and bottom mattress panels, as part of the same webs of material from which they are then severed or in a separate synchronously controlled border making section (106).
L'invention concerne une machine à matelasser (10, 100, 200, 300) équipée d'un poste de matelassage (27, 127, 227) et d'un poste d'impression (25, 125, 225) situé en amont du poste de matelassage. Un transporteur (20) s'étend via lesdits postes pour acheminer une bande (15) de matériau de matelassage à travers la machine. Au poste d'impression, on imprime un motif à plusieurs couleurs sur une couche supérieure (15), l'opération étant contrôlée par un organe de commande programmé (35, 135, 235, 335), ce qui permet de varier le motif d'une partie à l'autre de la bande, moyennant quoi on peut décorer d'un motif différent des zones individuelles et réduites de pans de la bande. De préférence, le transporteur déplace le matériau de matelassage par rapport à des têtes stationnaires (30), mais le transporteur peut aussi s'arrêter en différents postes, les têtes de matelassage et d'impression se déplaçant par rapport à la bande stationnaire sur le transporteur. Une information de positionnement longitudinal précise du motif imprimé est établie. Le transporteur déplace ensuite la bande de couche supérieure décorée vers un poste de séchage (26, 126, 226). Une fois la bande de couche supérieure assemblée avec des bandes de matière de rembourrage (18) et de renfort d'envers (17), le transporteur achemine la bande multicouche vers le poste de matelassage, où un motif de matelassage est piqué sur le matériau porteur du motif imprimé de manière à coïncider avec celui-ci, sous le contrôle de l'organe de commande. De préférence, l'impression est effectuée avant le matelassage, mais l'inverse est possible selon certains aspects de l'invention. Un poste de découpe (28) sépare les panneaux de bande portant des motifs composites imprimés et matelassés, sous le contrôle de l'organe de commande programmé. Pour la fabrication des revêtements de matelas, il est possible d'imprimer et de piquer des pans de bordure en coordination avec des pans de matelas supérieur et inférieur, comme faisant partie intégrante des mêmes bandes de matériau dont ils sont ensuite séparés, ou via un poste de fabrication de bordure séparé à commande synchrone (106).
