A security system is disclosed which has improved operating characteristics and in a preferred form is easier to install. The system includes an inside receiver/transceiver which is battery powered and operates in a standby state having very low power draw requirements. In this standby state the inside receiver/transceiver is adapted to receive a signal from a user's hand held remote unit, which can activate the inside unit to a full function state and alter the state of the security system from the exterior of the premise.
