The present invention is directed to a new treatment for schizophrenia. It has been discovered that schizophrenia will respond to the combination of an atypical antipsychotic and a valproate compound. This combination is especially useful for alleviating the acute symptoms of schizophrenia. The invention also extends to new formulations containing an antipsychotic in combination with a valproate compound.
