The present invention provides thickener compositions comprising a combination of associative thickeners, wherein at least one associative thickener is a hydrophobically modified cellulose derivative or a hydrophobically modified guar derivative and is present in the combination of associative thickeners in a relative amount of at least 70 % by weight or in a relative amount of not more than 30 % by weight, based on the weight of the combination of associative thickeners.
