ABSTRACT A combined propulsion and lift unit for a hovercraft employs an elongate shaft mounted for rotation about its longitudinal axis and a drive device connected to the shaft for rotating same at a selected speed. An axial wheel or propeller is mounted on the shaft for rotation therewith and a centrifugal fan wheel is mounted at the front end of the shaft for rotation. There is a centrifugal fan housing extending about the perimeter of the fan wheel, which housing has an axial fan inlet at the front thereof and an outlet for high pressure air arranged on one side thereof. The preferred unit has a mounting arrangement for rotating the unit about a vertical axis extending perpendicular to the central axis of the shaft.
