Abstract of the Disclosure The invention discloses a combined process for the removal of sulfur dioxide from waste stack gases and for the treatment of industrial waste acid solutions containing salts thereof which are capable of being converted to sulfides with minimum formation of sulfites or bisulfates, these salts including one or more of the mineral acid salts of iron. The inventive process includes the step of treating the waste acid solution to convert the iron salts contained therein to iron sulfide. An aqueous slurry containing 0.1 to 50% of the iron sulfide then is contacted with sulfur dioxide-containing stack gases, in a scrubber, at a pH of 5.5 to 6.5 and at a temperature of 100° to 150°F., to remove the sulfur dioxide from the gas and to produce sulfur and iron oxide. The combined process of the invention provides a treatment system whereby both waste solutions such as pickle liquors and sulfur-containing combustion gases such as coke oven or flue gas can be treated to remove contaminants from the waste solutions while also removing sulfur compounds such as sulfur dixoide from the combustion gases and recovering valuable products such as sulphur.
