A combined scanning probe and scanning energy microscope, in which the same scanning system is used for both the scanning probe and scanning energy images. A sample is translated substantially along a horizontal plane either between or below the probe (14) of a scanning probe microscope and the objective (12) of a scanning energy microscope. The probe (14) collects topographic or other information. The objective (12) focuses a fixed beam of energy to a small spot (16) on the sample, then collects energy from the same spot and transmits it to a detector (18). A vertical translator (22) connected to the probe (14) or sample support (10) provides the vertical motion necessary to maintain them in close proximity. The images produced by the two microscopes are in substantial direct registration with each other. The invention is exemplified by a combined atomic force and confocal laser scanning microscope with a translated sample.
Microscope combiné de balayage par sonde et par source d'énergie dans lequel on utilise le même système de balayage à la fois pour les images obtenues par la sonde et pour celles obtenues par la source d'énergie. On déplace un échantillon sensiblement le long d'un plan horizontal, soit entre la sonde (14) d'un microscope à sonde de balayage et l'objectif (12) d'un microscope à source d'énergie, soit sous ladite sonde. La sonde (14) recueille des informations topographiques ou autres. L'objectif (12) focalise un rayon fixe d'énergie sur un petit point (16) de l'échantillon, puis recueille l'énergie provenant de ce point et la transmet à un détecteur (18). Un dispositif (22) de translation vertical relié à la sonde (14) ou au support (10) d'échantillon fournit le déplacement vertical nécessaire au maintien d'une étroite proximité entre la sonde et l'échantillon. Les images produites par les deux microscopes sont en concordance pratiquement directe les unes avec les autres. A titre d'exemple, l'invention comprend un microscope combiné à forces atomiques et à laser confocal, avec échantillon déplacé en translation.
