Improvements are provided herein in a tape measure of the type including a housing having a first wall, a second wall and an end wall in which a transverse slit is provided, a spool rotatably supported in the housing on which an elongated tape having a plurality of measured graduations thereon is wound, the tape extending through the transverse slit, releasable means to retain the tape in any selected extended position when the spool is rotated in a first direction to extend the tape through the slot, means for rotating the spool in an opposite direction to retract the tape into the housing, and a stop on a free end of the tape to prevent the tape from being completely retracted into the housing. Such improvements include a marking arm on a selected wall, the marking arm having a proximal end and a distal end. The distal end of the arm includes a replaceable marking stylus. One improvement includes a particular end-to-end combination of the replaceable marking stylus with the distal end of the marking arm. Another improvement includes a first stop member which is provided on that selected wall adjacent to the marking arm. The proximal end of the marking arm includes a limit stop member. The first stop member is configured to cooperate with an edge of the marking arm to limit rotation of the marking arm in a counterclockwise direction to an inoperative position. The first stop member and the limit stop member are configured to cooperate to limit rotation of the marking arm in a clockwise direction to an operative position. Thus, when the marking arm is in its operative position, the replaceable marking stylus is transversely aligned with a desired graduation on the tape, thereby permitting a mark to be manually made on an article or on a material that is transverse to the desired graduation.
