COMBINED THERMAL AND SOLVENT STIMULATION ABSTRACT This invention provides a method for recovering heavy crude oil from an underground reservoir penetrated by a well, which comprises (a) heating the first 10-20 feet of the reservoir surrounding the wellbore with steam at a temperature below coking temperature but sufficient to increase the temperature 4-93°C (40-200°F) above the reservoir temperature; (b) producing the formation until most of the injected water is produced; (c) injecting into the reservoir a solvent optionally heated to at least the temperature at which it is desired to maintain the reservoir; (d) producing a solvent-crude mixture; and (e) repeating steps (c) and (d).
