ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE In an internal combustion engine of the recipro- cating piston type which is provided with an exhaust gas recirculation circuit to suppress the generation of NOx and has, two simultaneously operating spark plugs for each combustion chamber. the spark gaps of the two spark plugs are optimumly positioned in the combustion chamber to obtain full merit of the two-point ignition method. The position of the spark gaps is specified in terms of the distance between them relative to the cylinder bore diameter and a vertical distance of each spark gap from the bottom face of the cylinder head relative to the height of the combustion chamber through the same spark gap with the piston at its top dead center. This positioning of the two spark gaps is applicable to combustion chambers of a simple shape such as the hemispherical and pancake types. - 1 -
